Billie Eilish is getting real about what she will — and, more importantly, won’t — share with the public.
OK, so — let’s go back to November of last year, when the pop superstar confirmed her attraction to women. “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well,” she told Variety. “I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”
A few weeks later, she elaborated on the supposed revelation on the red carpet for Variety’s Hitmakers event. “I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?'” she said. “I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?'”
In April of this year, Billie sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone in advance of her latest record Hit Me Hard and Soft, where she expressed some frustration with the fact that she shared anything about her personal life and sexual identity.
“I was never planning on talking about my sexuality ever in a million years,” she told the publication. “It’s really frustrating to me that it came up.”
Now let’s fast-forward to today — specifically, a new interview with Billie in Vogue, in which she talks about how forthcoming she’s been in the past, as well as how she might be holding back more in the future.
“I wish no one knew anything about my sexuality or anything about my dating life. Ever, ever, ever,” Billie told the publication when she was asked about her previous statements on the topics.
“And I hope that they never will again. And I’m never talking about my sexuality ever again. And I’m never talking about who I’m dating ever again.”
Billie also explained that part of this decision is driven by the fact that, in the past, she hasn’t anticipated how much of a big deal people will make about her comments.
“I guess I also underestimate that things I say will be blown up into the biggest news of the whole world,” she said, referring to the notion of judging her — and others — on every single comment as “unnatural.”
“We’re all babies. We’re all little kids growing up and learning ourselves.”
